What this pathway involves
Express Entry is not a program in itself. It is the online system Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) uses to manage applications for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program and the Canadian Experience Class.
Candidates who meet the criteria of at least one of those programs may create a profile. Profiles in the pool are scored under the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which considers factors such as age, education, official language ability, Canadian and foreign work experience, and certain additional factors including a provincial nomination or French language ability.
IRCC issues invitations to apply through rounds of invitations. Some rounds are general, and others are category-based, focusing on specific work experience or language profiles. The cut-off score is not fixed and varies between rounds.

Language tests, credential assessments, reference letters, police certificates and medical examinations each have their own timelines and validity periods that need to be sequenced carefully.
Category-based rounds change the picture
Eligibility for a category-based round depends on criteria published by IRCC for that year. Categories are reviewed periodically and may change.
